Are you warming up properly?
Before exercising, don’t skimp on the warm-up! Benefits include:
– Increased Muscle Temperature: (for a more forceful contraction and a quicker relax speed- enhancing both speed and strength and reducing the probability of overstretching a muscle, causing injury)
– Dilated Blood Vessels: (reducing the resistance to blood flow and stress on the heart)
– More Efficient Cooling: (better sweating to prevent overheating)
– Increase Blood Temperature: (helps make oxygen more available to muscles)
Not sure what a good warm-up entails? Check out our Exercise of the Week each week in May and learn a complete dynamic warm-up to do before you exercise!

Flexibility training should be performed after a proper warm-up to allow effective stretching to take place. NEVER STRETCH COLD. Ideally, flexibility fitness should be performed 5 to 7 days a week for all major joints. Stretch to the point of mild discomfort, but not pain. Hold static stretches for 20 to 30 seconds, making sure to take deep even breaths. Static stretching should be performed after the workout. Dynamic stretching is a better way to prepare your muscles for a higher intensity workout.
