Trade in the firm mattress for a medium firmness. A body pillow can also help maintain proper curvature of the lumbar spine.
Lift with your legs & hips, not your back. Keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting.
Quit smoking. Smoking impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to spinal tissues.
