Preventing Metabolic Decline

Did you know?:
Research shows that, on average, individuals experience a 2 to 4% decline in their resting metabolic rate (RMR), as well as losing an average of 5 pounds of lean mass each decade after 25. This means that most people can look forward to an ever-diminishing metabolic rate from their mid-20s onward. A person with a RMR of 1500 kcal at age 25 may have an RMR around 1400 kcal a decade later. Add another 10 years, they’ll be down to burning a mere 1300 kcal.
Muscle loss may be the key factor. On average people lose about 5 pounds of lean mass per decade between the ages of 25 and 65. So, in addition to dropping around 300 kcal of metabolic power by 65, most folks also lose around 20 pounds of lean mass. Because muscle is so metabolically active, this muscle loss is directly correlated to much of age related metabolic loss. This suggests that metabolic decline isn’t due wholly to age, but lifestyle related. What we think of as “normal aging” may actually be an outcome of inactivity!
The good news is, we can take direct action to prevent this decline through appropriate exercise training and nutritional intake. Don’t be one of the average!!!
